Residents express concern after baby goat gets stuck on Oahu cliffside

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) -A baby goat is gaining attention, and concern, in West Oahu.
A Waianae resident first spotted the small white goat on a cliffside Monday. He was surprised to see it was still stuck the next day.
“I noticed that the mature goat went down to the small one trying to coax it out, but it couldn’t get out,” the resident said.
Wednesday marks the third day the goat has been stranded.
“I’m just hoping for the best, and maybe later on today that little baby goat can get out and not fall off the cliff,” the resident said.
“I don’t know what the protocol is, but there are people in agencies that do humanitarian type rescues on other types of animals, like nene goose, dogs stuck in drainage ditches, and I was kind of hoping someone would be willing and be able to try and assist and help this little thing,” he said.
Hawaii News Now reached out to various agencies to inquire about rescue efforts.
An Oahu game biologist with the Hawaii Department of Land and Natural Resources said the goat is on private property and goats are considered an invasive species so the department cannot intervene.
The Hawaiian Humane Society says it does not have the “specialized equipment” needed to rescue the goat.
The Honolulu Fire Department says “it’s not their place.”
Residents say it’s common for goats to roam the cliffs, but they’ve never seen one stranded and alone.
